Created in 2005... ages ago. "Leva uma mochila vazia" [disse-me uma amiga] and so it started. Travel notes: from Jerusalem to the Philippines and Conakry, a bit of Kundalini Yoga, my Kitcheree detox, a lot about my readings and my music... New challenge: 2017 - mission in Portugal?

Porque não escrevo mais?
Porque parece que ninguém me lê... Ninguém comenta nada... Foram todos de férias?
For romantics and believers
A movie coming up... (don't know when though).
The Lake House - Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. It was him who made me realize there were some pretty interesting male specimens among the dark-haired, brown-eyes guys ;) Those were the times of Speed, 12 years ago.
And she's nice, normal, makes us (girls) believe we can find a guy just as nice as she can...

Holidays postponed
Me and time are in constant struggle.
I just have to learn to stop struggling, I'm sure it'd be easier.
Anyway, I had to cancel my trip to Jerusalém :( :( :( Some other time... I'm really sorry not to attend the wedding though...
I'll be all over ACH's translations (or the translations will be all over me) until wednesday, I think.
Till then... take care

Sardines by the sea and two hours enjoying the Sun and the sea in Albarquel!... Wonderful!! My batteries are charged again!

One down, two to go
First translation, from French into English, finished and sent.
After a night's sleep, I'll change the chip and start translating from French and English into Portuguese.

A nossa equipa :) :) :)

My what and whereabouts...
I'll stop e-mailing and sending messages booking days and schedules for coffee, I keep changing!... Yeah, ok, what's new, right?...
Anyway, I'm here, I don't forget you but I really have to get some work done. Although I'm trying to go out once or twice a week, trying to keep a foot on the outer world, I think I have to behave this week.
- No news about my house rehab. Don't ask (please), I'll keep you posted.
- I'm trying to finish a translation today and have two more to go. Until June 27th. They're paid, so you understand if they're the priority, right?
- Kundalini Yoga classes are going fine. I feel comfortable doing it, trying to make the best exercises for everybody and it's great to hear the students' feedback and how they feel their life (or their perception of it) is changing with time.
- Yes, I am a Ayurvedic massage therapist. I know not many of you know it (apart from the lucky ones who have received a massage ;)). As with almost everything that regards my presence, you have to book a schedule; even if it is at your place.
- I'm organizing a few workshops with Siri Prakash - in Portugal from July 4th to August 3rd -. I'll send the flyers by e-mail to everybody, hope to have them before the end of the week. We'll have a special Full Moon class on July 10th (in Setúbal) and a special New Moon class on July 25th (also in Setúbal). You're more than welcome!
Siri Prakash is also a numerologist. So, if you're in a moment of your life when you'd like to know more about yourself and what-to-do-next, if you need a hand on bringing out that professional or life desire carefully kept in your heart, think about booking a session. I won't miss the opportunity! (of course! :))
- I'm travelling to Jerusalem on June 28th (I hope.. the agency should confirm the ticket today). A few days of holidays and Rasha and Fadi's wedding. No need to tell that I'm thrilled to go back! I think Jerusalem is my 2nd home... And I'm really happy to be present on that day, after all we've spent 1,5 years working together, miss Rasha! I'll be back to Portugal on July 3rd.
Hmm... I think that's all for now.
Love,
Susana

A great night out!!
Saturday spent with Yoga class and supporting the Espaço Lótus for a while at Festas do Pinhal Novo. I had a Reiki treatment done... strange but good...
In the evening, I drove to Lisbon to meet Susi Salmador y Elena Roncal, who were in Portugal for a girls' weekend.
Together with two really nice and charming British guys who sail for a living (another great job!), we had a good dinner at "A Baiúca" (1) (an option for whenever Cataplana is full, like yesterday), a drink in Bairro Alto and, then, off to the Docas to dance!
And I had a wonderful, wonderful time!! One of the best evenings over the last months... ;) Thanks, girls & boys!
Next time in Barcelona, San Sebastian, La Rochelle, wherever...
(1) Dinner at "A Baiúca" in Bairro Alto.

Where? How? What?
I'm still in Setúbal, Portugal. More or less...
Yoga classes excepted, travels were to:
1. Parque da Bela-Vista, in Lisbon, on June 4th for the closing concert of Rock in Rio. Corinne Bailey Rae - nice; Anastasia - impressing and full of emotion, I want to be like her! (even Sting's 'light' faded a bit); Sting - I still like him (always... :)) but nothing new and he didn't sing 'Send your love into the future'... (I know he sang some 20 songs. Still...)
2. Madrid, last Sunday, for a course of Yoga for pregnant women (nothing new to tell people, I was there just to learn how to teach... for now :)).
How am I?
Fine, on the run, as usual :) but all good.
The schedule of my Kundalini Yoga classes seems to be sort of organized, I'm adapting to this new routine of working while other people are going home.
House sector - choosing and deciding.
Really busy lately (as you might have guessed from my mail and blog absence).
The whats over the last 3 weeks?
- translating a talk of Yoghi Bhajan on Meditation - I'll see with my teachers if I can forward it to anyone who is interested.
- June 3rd - marriage of Teresa and André. Simply beautiful and beautifully simple. The decoration, the food, the flowers, the bride's dress - everything wonderful and such a good picture of the bride and groom. A lovely, lovely day! Oh, and the view of Quinta Moinhos S. Filipe is...breath-taking. I could stay there just staring for hours and hours. Check out their site: http://moinhossaofilipe.planetaclix.pt/
- I've chosen the kitchen tiles, but the windows must be installed before the masons come. I'm just waiting for a last info before making the final decision concerning the windows, afterwards it'll be a month before they're ready.
- until middle of next week, I'll be attached to my computer most of the time, working on the revision and translation of an ACH proposal for Angola.
- next Saturday afternoon - at Festas do Pinhal Novo, with the Espaço Lótus talking about Yoga to the passers-by or maybe doing some demo class.

00h30, No man's land café - I don't know if the management has changed but the deco did. The 2 ugly paintings on the wall are gone, replaced by 2 twin paintings of a teapot. The bottle shelves aren't new but, at least, they look cleaner.
Perhaps they just did some Spring cleaning.
Ah! The two unfriendly waitresses were replaced by two faster, friendly & chubby waiters on their 50s.
The tortilla pincho wasn't great, so I guess the cook didn't change.
05h45 am (Spanish time), Mendez Alvaro station - I ask my 'traditional' breakfast: a toast and a thick, rich chocolate, that I delightfully eat with a teaspoon. :) I need to be prepared for the 'battles' at the employment centre and the Tax Dept. And I won't be having lunch before 2pm.
1pm - I'm astonished at how quickly I've managed to do everything!... Bank and stop at ACH included. Nice... :)
2pm - Lunch with Esme and Carole. At Tanin, super-fast as usual.
3pm - With all the due respect, I felt like St. Peter, sort of... 3 times asked if I wanted to go 1,5 months to Jerusalem, 3 times I said no. Not that I don't want to go, but I can't go... I hope to start with my flat's rehab works this week and haven't got anybody to replace me at the Yoga classes. Plus Siri Prakash is coming and I can't just leave her stranded...
Anyway, there will be other missions. And I will go to Jerusalem on holidays, at some point, some time, some day.
Afternoon - A beer at Comercial, tea and chocolate cake at Teteria de la Abuela, pizza at Plaza 2 de Mayo with the usual suspects (Esme, Paula & Teresa). Guys, next time, I'll write a week before I arrive letting you know I'll be in Madrid. Sorry...
11pm - Back on the bus for another 8 hours of travelling. Don't ask me why, I just wanted to be back to Portugal quickly and get on with things over here.
Still and even though I only stayed one day this time, the shock is huge... I didn't realize but I missed Madrid a lot, the streets, the movement, a different lifestyle. Can't quite compare Setúbal with Madrid, it isn't 'comparable'.
Since Wednesday, I've spend most of my spare mental time on sort of a digestive process, weighing the consequences of my professional/living choices. I definitely must go out more often.
Perhaps they just did some Spring cleaning.

Like I used to say, when you feel like changing and don't really know what, a change of haircut or hairdo is always nice :)
I'll post a photo one of these days.
I'll post a photo one of these days.
Ando há uns dias...
... com esta música na cabeça.
Xutos & Pontapés Lyrics - O Mundo Ao Contrário
onde vais?
perguntas tu ainda meio a dormir
nao sei bem
respondo eu sem saber o que vestir
porque sais?
ainda é cedo e tu nao sabes mentir
tenho a noite a atravessar
dói-me nao ir
tenho a noite a atravessar
dói-me não ir

Rincewind
So long, Eric, alchemist, summoner, 'inconscient teenager' of the Discworld.
I think I finally understood the real essence of Rincewind and like him much better now than in the Colour of Magic (which I might even consider re-reading) . He can't beat Moist though... :)

A really nice weekend
Yoga at the park of Montijo - lovely... :) I'll see if I can schedule a class outdoors every month, during Summer.
Yoga for kids in Mafra - just two kids but it was really funny!... I had a great time!
Finally, the classes of Kundalini Yoga in Mafra won't be starting yet. With the Summer coming, classes on Saturdays afternoons don't seem so 'apetizing'. I was looking forward to teaching the kids but I'm also happy to have Saturdays off. More or less, as activities seem to be piling up already!...
Dinner & evening at "Neca d'Almeida's" :) Gui is absolutely irresistible. Or maybe I'm just getting softier by the day.
On the topic of 'irresistible babies', read RAJ on Visão of this week for a good laugh!
Cool Sunday - playing 'petanque' and table tennis with Dany, I read a whole Visão! :) and had a lovely day with the family of Livramento.
The cherry on top of the cake? "My Family" Does anyone watch it? It's GREAT!! On RTP2, round 11.30pm.

I'm so in love!...
I fell in love watching Oprah's show, he went there, sang a few songs and.. I fell completely in love. His name? James.
We're not fully compatible but one can't be too picky these days.
Why did I fell in love? Because of his eyes and the way he is so good expressing his feelings. Just check "Goodbye My Lover".

Happy Birthday, dear Rasha!!
3 years gone by since your birthday, my first dinner out with Palestinian friends. At Askadinya*, where your brother Jack (? my memory is getting worse...) works. By the way, greetings to all your family, especially to the small ones and to sweet Maria.
Oddly, I don't remember what I've offered you but I know you wanted to buy some shoes for Fadi. Belated happy birthday to him too!
Can't tell you how much I miss Jerusalem and those times. It was a great period of my life. And I thank you for being there all the way!
I wish you a wonderful year, may it all flow nice, smoothly and HAPPILY in this new period of your life! ;)
*Askadiniya
"The Loquat tree in Arabic is called "Askdinya" which, literally translated, means "the best of all worlds." The setting for this Jerusalem restaurant is a lovely covered garden in an historical Arab house with classical music and an assortment of international cuisine. . . . . and, yes, there is an Askadinya tree in the center of the garden !!

Roubaram-me os 2 espelhos do carro!...

Marginal - 10 Abril 06
Duran Duran - "Don't say your prayer for me now, save it for the morning after. Some people call it one night stand but we may call it Paradise."
James - "Sometimes when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul."

Sorry, people...

7 moments in Madrid - 10 Mar 06
1. 7h10 am - Não dormi quase nada no autocarro. Ao trocar de metro, oiço um clarinete a tocar parte da OST do Lord of the Rings... Até fiquei com pele de galinha. Instante de felicidade...
"Problema teu." Capisce?
5. A música indiana do CD Casa do Castelo dançada no 1º dia do Tantra...
6. Horror - banda de rock no metro, purposeful and not bad mas, depois de 3h de estiramentos, asanas e mantras, é como se me estivessem a dar com uma panela na cabeça.
7. Deliciosos crepes!

As gémeas dormiam tranquilamente.
Soube-me muito bem!

Bimby
I made a great acquisition yesterday. Becoming 'of age' has its consequences.
Leaving Mom's house, this time not to go 'to the field' (where I usually have somebody who cooks during the week) but to go to my place, my own personal home sweet home (where I'm suppose to cook for myself everyday, and that's every single day or almost, and for some guests once in a while) means - since it's a Portuguese house, of course - it means, I was saying, to be able to cook. And that means cooking 'proper' food.
Now, for some of my friends and family, veggie salad and pasta al pesto (don't start dreaming already, I only tried to do the sauce at home once) isn't real food.
Plus I'd love to learn how to make a good carrot & peas rabbit stew...
Since I'm going to have my flat on my own, there isn't a wedding list anywhere (can't have it all, can we?). So... I bought a present for myself - a super-multi-purpose-do-it-all-in-no-time machine... the BIMBY!!!
Though scholars say women can only be in love with one 'subject' at a time, I can assure you that's not true. I'm in love with KY for 2 years now and I just fell in love with Bimby. :)
The wonderful thing is that having it means I'll have more time for KY (who demands a great deal of attention as you already know) and also have more time for me and for you!
Check out the link ... (above in Portuguese, here in English)
Ah...and this post doesn't mean I'm going to spend all my spare time cooking - I did it once and, apart from the food (which was valorated as really good as in 'you could cook instead of us going to the restaurant, what do you think?), the results weren't all that great.
But I can, at least, go back to holding nice dinner parties, even if I don't have my dear Renata geographically so close these days.

Yupii !!! Hurrah!!! Uuuuhhh!!!
I got it!! It's mine!! Finally!!!
My precious... :)
I signed the house contract today - have the keys, changed the gas, water, etc contracts and can start working on the 'rehab' works straight away (I've started paying bills too... :( ).
Hope to have it ready for a house-warming party in a couple of months ;)

Back home
I'm back, chanting mantras as much as I can and the 'entourage' allows me. Bought a couple of CDs too, so the KY classes will definitely improve :) I'll eventually learn how to put links to musics on the posts so you can enjoy my favourite tunes (mantras, pop music, etc) without having to hear me singing.
My apologies to the birthday girl - I'm sure the party was great..!
And Greetings to Vincent and Angie!! - I wish you plenty of wonderful days together, may life be such as you can keep as sweet and kind-hearted as I've met you.
For some 'weird reason', I also want to tell you "Happy Revolution Day!" (gosh, I don't recognize myself anymore).
The other thing I want to tell you is the more I go to Spain the less I understand how Portugal is going further down each day that passes while Spain seems to move on... Fuel 0,35 cts/ltr less, Diesel between 0,15 and 0,30cts/ltr less. ??? Kms and kms of nice green fields just after kms and kms of abandoned (or pretty much loooking like it) land... I do remember some of my Economics classes and I still can't understand it (or refuse to admit the real reasons).
It makes me think of a book I had to read while preparing my admission exam for the UCP (in 1992...), a book that I never forgot and intend to read again (as soon as I unpack all my boxes):
O Enigma Português de Francisco da Cunha Leão. And here is a nice post about the State of our Nation...

Toledo - 21 a 23 de Abril
People,
I'm off tomorrow (in 8 hours, actually) to Toledo, for a weekend-retreat on Mantras. I'm sure my students will be thankful as I'll be learning to sing better...
Take care, enjoy the long weekend (if you have it) or, at least, the fact that next week will be pretty cool - we celebrate the Revolution (I can see the question/exclamation marks in some faces) and... I'M SIGNING THE CONTRACT OF MY HOUSE ON WEDNESDAY!! Hip, hip, hurrah!!
...
...
ahh... we're not taking reservations for dinner yet, sorry...

Kitcheree - day 32, day 36 and over...
Pois...

Kitcheree - day 31
Ah, e um pouco de leitão e (shame on me) batatas fritas hoje.

KY Montijo (nova aula!!) e Amora

Um dia destes, vi o livro e pensei: "Why not?

I can't say it's the most beautiful bridge in the world, I don't know all the bridges in the world... It is definitely one of my favourites; and, for me, the most beautiful in Portugal and the most beautiful 'for cars' that I know.April 8th - I'm travelling South, it's just after 10am and the sky is covered with thin clouds partially veiling the Sun. Looking ahead it looks as if the bridge would end in the middle of nowhere... the sunrays are reflected by the clouds and the river bathes everything in a whitish light, hiding any signs of nature or civilization. I feel so calm...

Ida ao ginásio
Hoje ia morrendo.

5 months of laziness in Philippines are showing their effects… I’m fine during the Yoga classes but my muscles can hardly recover during the 48 hours in-between. And as the classes in other places are starting I need to be fit quickly!…
So I decided to go to the gym - I’ve started yesterday and am feeling just fine today (no muscle pain), which is probably normal as I didn’t really work out all that hard.
I hate doing sport inside a room surrounded by machines but… well, a few more weeks and I can go swimming in Albarquel. ;)

Underground & 'Transiders'
Last Friday, I went to CC Mouraria as I wanted to buy some hair for plaits to send to Aichatou (they didn't have the brand you wanted, I'll keep on looking).
Now, say underground and repeat it:
1. The shopping center has a ground floor and two underground floors.
2. Go there and to Picoas Plaza afterwards and you suddenly feel like Manila and Lisbon aren't all that different. I just spotted the differences faster in the Philippines... Probably because in Lisbon I'm in the middle of both worlds while in the Philippines I lived in that sort of parallel universe that most of the humanitarian workers live in.
Eternally aliens or 'transiders' (as in not-insiders and not-outsiders).
A 'transider' is someone who changes his/her mind every other minute from feeling comfortable to a complete stranger while walking around CC Mouraria or while he/she is sitting on a nice coffeeshop in downtown Lisbon (Paris/London/Madrid) or browsing in some souk in Morocco or while working at a clinic in the middle of any African country or... wherever actually.
There are three situations where he/she feels at home:
i) in front of a stop sign;
ii) lying on a beach, with a cold beer (or the possibility of it) nearby;
iii) at the airport (any airport), buying the latest newspapers, some cigarrettes/candies and choosing the next book to purchase.
To all of you 'transiders', wherever you are.
Love, Susie

Kitcheree - day 19
Absolutely correct, by tomorrow evening I'll be halfway through.
I've lost 4 kgs so far and, pretty much like last year, not having bread is the worst... And some mornings I'm craving for a lovely cup of brewed coffee or some real tea instead of herbal tea (and, mind you, I have at least 8 different 'flavours' of these in the cupboard).
As for the food and, again, pretty much like last year, each recipe tastes better than the previous one. Today's is Spinach and Pumpkin Mild Madras Curry with a hint of Cocunut.
Since I'm following an Indian diet I might as well use some real Indian spices. So, last Friday, I went to the indian supermarket in CC Martim Moniz and bought two different mixes of spices. I'll try the second one on Wednesday.

Mais aulas de Kundalini Yoga - update
Like some say, I'll soon be working all over the World!... if the World would be the Rive Gauche of the Tagus river, that is.
A 1ª aula é gratuita!!

I finally went dancing!
Yes, that is correct. I finally stopped being lazy and went out with a few friends on Saturday night.
Initial expectations of dancing salsa and other latin rhythms were a bit frustrated but we still had a little moment to (try to) learn a few steps of merengue and funaná, then a few hours more of Shakira, Brisbal (and some pretty bad tunes too) and, by the end, Boy George, Wham and Glorya Gaynor.
And I did see the brilliant performance of mr le Marquis RFG. He was even kind enough to invite for a dance with which I was most pleased.
I know some of you might not believe it but I actually left after 4am and slept happily until 2.30pm today :) :)
Sara and Renata, temos mesmo que organizar aquele nosso fim-de-semana for old times sake and present times mental health.
Karen, Pedro, Oscar, tio Arturo, I miss the salsa nights in East Timor and at Bonita in Jerusalem.

Wonderful Sunday
It somehow reminded me of my times in Paris. 8 years ago already... (yeah, years do pass even if you keep a young spirit :))
Lunch with friends from 'the other side of the river' and one of my cutest nephews ;)
A bit of sun by the river, followed by coffee and tea at the Castelo-Fortaleza de S. Filipe (you can read more here) and then a stop at the almost acquired future residence of the Duchess (that is, me).
21.30pm: A really good movie - Crash. Especially considering last time I went to the cinema was to see "Madagascar" and the previous "Fantastic Four" (both out of my own free will and I quite enjoyed it). We went to the cinema Charlot where the tickets cost only 3.00Eur (!) which is quite rare nowadays... Setúbal is not all that bad, hein?

"Wocka! Wocka!" You're the life of the party, and you love making people crack up. If only your routine didn't always bomb! You may find more groans than laughs, but always keep the jokes coming. |
Why don't you take The Muppet Personality Test?
Kitcheree – day 6
Away from the web and from everything else
I really should get those reports for ACH-Philippines done... The more time passes, the less motivation I have… :( (you were right, Felix)
So… I’ll be away from the e-mails, phone calls and the blogs for a week or so.
Only exception will be a lunch/dinner with my dear Renata and seeing Sebastião, who must be really big and lovely! All other visits and ‘outgoings’ are postponed.

Back to the Yoga classes
Saturday in Montijo (9 people), yesterday in Setúbal (3 ppl), it’s a restart. 3 more demo classes between this week and next and I should be able to have a class in Setúbal for now. Hopefully, I’ll have one in Montijo too, once a week. Let’s see.
I’m also starting the contacts to give demo classes in Lisbon. I’ll keep you posted.

Aula de KY no Montijo
Correu bem. Eu senti-me bem :)
E a primeira vez é gratuita. Nos espaços, é o preço de tabela.

No man's land - March 9
I still haven’t checked the new airplane rates with Vueling (thanks anyway, Madalena) so last Friday, at 9.30pm, I took the bus to go to the White Tantric Yoga seminar in Madrid.
The good thing about the bus is I can get in in Setúbal and come back directly home too. This time I even had a bit of VIP treatment as the bus came to Setúbal only to pick me up and same thing on the way back.
The bad thing is you can never sleep properly even if it's the night bus as on each stop everybody must leave the bus "for security reasons" (ok, there are only 2 per trip. Still...).
And so it was that I arrived to...
Location: No man's land, somewhere just after (or just before depending on which direction you’re going) the border between Portugal and Spain, 25kms from Badajoz.
Time: Just when I had finally managed to fall asleep, ie round 1 o’clock.
The bus stops at the usual place, a gas station/truck night stop/restaurant-cafeteria. I’ve been there… a dozen times…? And I still don’t know the name of the place.
The management has changed, I think, no more paintings on the wall and the maids have changed, these are even more unpleasant than the others…
I can’t stand the smoke and don't really feel like asking anything. By the look on their faces, most of my travel companions are in the same state of mind.
We'd rather be sleeping but we force a smile and ask for a tea, a coffee, a latte... And we repeat the request, of course, as they never understand your accent. It's normal, the border is more than 30kms away...
Back on the bus, the lights are still on, a mobile starts ringing and rings and rings... After more than 40 secs (or so it seemed, even 10 secs it's an awful lot with some of these politones), my brain cells are all yelling: "Will you answer that or shut it off, please??!!"
The driver answers. Oh, it's ok, he even smiled when I got in so I excuse him and cover myself with my coat , trying to go back to sleep.
Next month, I'll make sure to check the Vueling site...

Confesso...
Casa I - Os registos provisórios...

- Comecei a tirar as minhas trancinhas.

Pause on translation
Short break to quickly take Pantufa outside and put the kettle on. After a cappuccino shake breakfast, I think I'll live on tea the rest of the day. Can’t stop, can’t stop…
There’s a proposal for Angola to be presented on Monday, so I got some 15 pages to translate and 30 more to revise; Friday at 6pm. I don’t know why but it’s always like this.
I don’t complain though. I’m sure many would love to have this: 2 days work and 5 days holidays ;) Only thing is I didn’t go dancing after all…

Movies on TV last Sunday
Atila, the Hun The man is gorgeous!! Number two, just after Sandokan of course. The movie?… Well, good I think, for a Sunday afternoon. (I forgot I’m supposed to write down some intelligent stuff once in a while…)
Behind the enemy lines Now, this one is also a Sunday movie, but could be a Monday or Thursday evening movie. I quite liked it actually.
It was interesting to see Owen Wilson doing something else than the usual clownish role (that I think he does well). And though they don’t go deep on the analysis, the movie mentions some important issues of the forgotten conflicts. The action takes place somewhere on the territory of Bosnia/Serbia.
Rent it or buy it in Philippines, it’s worth it.
(Soundtrack: my mom saying every 10 minutes “ai, coitadinho, coitadinho…” “Eu não acredito que ele vai morrer” which we can shortly translate by: "Oh, poor dear, I can't believe he's going to die").
Why am I so vague about the movies? I think I was filing my mail of the last 5 months while watching…

Phrases ACH-Philippines II
“A esperança é a última coisa a morrer.” (Transl."Hope is the last thing to die.")
" Machiavel
(Deve ser a frase do dia de alguns políticos.../Probably the quote of the day of some politicians.)
(Einstein)

Disney princess
I do recall thinking I have a few interesting things to post here but was too tired and off to bed.
Still... there are so many blogs (heaps!) and I was tired so just started browsing, just a bit. I have a few favorites (changes coming up) and some ... that I don't know yet. Like this one, where I found this: Which Disney princess are you?
So I thought.. well, why not? Just for fun and then I will go to bed...
I'll tell you what I am if you tell me what you are :)
(sorry, guys, I didn't find a quiz for you this time, but I'll look for something)

Really important things in life...
Wonderful moments with the simplest things:
- a cuttlefish sandwich by the river. Yummy!!
- aftre two rainy days, spending two hours reading by the river, with the Sun on my face :)
- finishing the day having crab for dinner...
I'm on holidays!!!

Ok... eu acalmo-me...
Parece-me bem.

O curso correu muito bem e senti-me quase completamente integrada.

Back to Portugal
Hi, people,
Here I am, back to 'home, sweet home'. It's rather cold though... :(
I'll be running from Setúbal to Lisbon and back over the next two weeks; and in Madrid for the Yoga course from the 17th to the 21st. Yes, I won't be here for my birthday... but we can celebrate when I'm back!
I'm a bit busy these days trying to move on with the loan for my house :) :) :) and finishing a few reports from the Philippines mission.
Hopefully, I'll be totally free for visits, coffees, etc from the 22nd on. Meanwhile, I'll try to make up via e-mail and phone calls, OK?
It's nice to be back! See you soon!

PS: Matrix hairdo e agenda
Quem já viu o penteado novo, concorda. Matrix total :)

A few things you should know about me…
From my horoscope 26Jan:
"The stars have unleashed your inner prankster. You're in on all the jokes, from the biggest to the smallest - and you're not above perpetrating a few yourself. It's this kind of thing that makes you so in-demand."
Yes, as if having a father, a brother and a brother-in-law like this wasn’t enough…
Well, know you know how the ACH staff in Manila will remember me – I’m the joker. Here to cheer up people. There are worse things in life, I say.
and:
"All those rumors about your sign being cold, aloof and detached? Untrue. Totally untrue. The stuff about you being objective, impartial and incapable of prejudice? Absolutely true. You're about to prove all that and more -- to anyone who's willing to listen, and even to some who won't be."
Every single moment of my life. Or most of them, anyway.

That was then, this is...
No one has tried to guess yet. :(
And it's no use sending me e-mails asking in private... The deal is: general 'news' are posted on the blog.
You might just be lucky. I have to have my picture taken for my visa tomorrow morning so maybe...maybe I'll post something on the weekend. Who knows?

1. O sorriso do Prof. Cavaco Silva a receber os parabéns de alguns companheiros – sei que o meu pai Ricardo também teria ficado contente;
2. A boa decisão económica dos meus compatriotas – escolheram a melhor opção disponível em função dos candidatos que se apresentavam;

Office with a view

This is the view from my office. Not so bad, hein?...
The sunset is different every day and absolutely wonderful. For me, who loves to watch it (who doesn’t?), it’s a vraie bonheur.
It’s such a nice ending for any day, no matter what happened. I apologize for those who haven’t windows in your offices… I’ve been there (and hate it).
I don’t actually have windows, but these huge half-glass, half-walls. A wonderful view just can’t open the window to have better pictures.
Anyway, I’ll have plenty of beautiful mental images. It’d be something to tell you when I’m back.
If I’d tell everything here on the blog, there wouldn’t be anything left to talk about…!
Replacement problems
For those who still didn’t believe… my booking was confirmed this afternoon. Departure date is set for the 5th. Eh!eh!eh!, I scared you with the post title, didn’t I?
Madrid is sending another expatriate to finish the accountancy and train the new national administrator so calm down your hearts… this time is for real.
I’m also counting down the days, although I feel sorry for leaving the staff and the “Leger family”. They’ve all been wonderful with me and I know it will be hard to say goodbye (once again… it’s one of the reasons I must stop doing this job…).
Answering your question, it’s not that I can’t stand being here, it’s more that I have too many things/people pulling me back - lucky me!...
And I have to admit (and now I am sure!) that I much rather go back to my yoga lessons than spending all my days with accountancy and financial reports. I can get both things in some sort of professional mix (proportions yet to be decided) but only admin-finance, no, never again!
Please remind me next time temptation strikes, will you?!...
Last Friday, my boss and I almost choked when the candidate we had chosen as national administrator - and with whom I had started the hand-over already! – wrote to tell that wasn’t available anymore. What??
‘Rumination’ period over the weekend, crisis meeting on Monday and 2nd best contacted. He wants the job. Perfect! You won’t believe it but it’s the 3rd time in 1.5 months that a candidate for a key post disappears after accepting the post… and this time salary was not the issue. Feitiço?? Gosh!
Well, it’s solved. Hip, hip, hurrah! I’ll try to keep you posted on the hand-over evolution, specially, on its best moments, it’s always funny to see the reactions of the rookies. :)
Meanwhile, we have an audit going on, of a project funded by the European Union.
My heart and thoughts are with all of you who have embraced the challenging career of auditor. You were probably a very, very 'badly-behaved' human on your last life…

That was then...

What am I doing in Manila?
After 4 months and 9 days here, I should probably tell you why am I here... :)
Some of you do know but some others aren't so lucky as to get regular news - sorry...
I'm still working with NGOs, still working with ACH - so far my longest employer in spite of the interruptions -. Oh, for those who don't know, ACH stands for Acción contra el Hambre.
I'm am still (again) an Administrator, which means my days are spent with accounting, Excel tables, financial reports, a bit of human resources management (and some HHRR paperwork like contracts and so) and a bit of legal affairs though not so much on this mission. A big part of my job here has been selecting and recruiting a new mission administrator.
Now, this doesn't mean I dropped the Yoga or my idea of buying a flat in Setúbal.
But... a certain group of circumstances have brought me here for a few months:
- ACH needed an Administrator for a few months;
- I needed a job and hope to have the right to the unemployment subsidy afterwards, thus having some base to hold on to while I develop the Yoga courses and possibly look for a job in Portugal (while I can't depend only on the Yoga);
- I was missing being in the field and on that phase: "hmm.. Can I really settle down?..." and "It's so great being 'on the field'!..." and... Well, some (1) say this is like a virus that you can never eradicate. Once you get it, you're doomed to be forever restless and periodically (or forever) on the move.
Using the words of our dear António Variações, as often quoted by me and my friend Faneca: "Estou bem aonde não estou, porque eu só quero ir aonde não vou..."
[I'm fine wherever I am not, 'cause I only want to go wherever I'm not going to.]
I can tell you, it's sometimes tough to live like this... And sometimes I have wished I could be more like some of you. But you know what? I am not... And I'm quite happy with who I am. Not quite - I am happy!
I was speaking with one of my friends on msn a few weeks ago about what we most fear in life... Although I'm a quite calm and relaxed person most of the time (so much I trouble my Dad who isn't all that calm... (2)), I can't possibly imagine stopping thinking, stopping learning, stopping changing; and, above all, I can't see myself doing exactly the same thing on and on and on everyday, nor can I see myself not agreeing or not being happy with something I see, hear, live and not saying or doing anything about it.
So... I'm heading back to Madrid on the 5th (fingers crossed... my Madrid's supervisor has confimed the date last Wednesday but I don't have the flight booking yet...), should spend 2-3 days at the HQ for my debriefing and, then, back home to finally buy my flat (great thanks to Filipa and Gonçalo who are patiently waiting for me all this time) and go back to study and teach Kundalini Yoga - start checking your schedules, we're back in track, people!
What if Yoga doesn't work? What if I get restless again? Well, I'll just move on and start again! But it might just work, you know... :) And I do love you even if we think differently in some ways.
Hmm... I got to run now. I'm having dinner at Felix's, some savoyarde specialties cooked by his father. And still have to drop by the supermarket to buy some wonderful Chilean red wine - (Gato Negro, always, mestre Arturo!).
Read Agostinho da Silva.
Soundtrack to this post: Nickelback, Evanescence, Texas and Enya. That's who I am. :)
(1) These some are, of course, others who feel like I do. And that for some of you who read these lines are just as weird as the Aliens on Sci-fi movies...
(2) Let's see if I can get you to post something with this open challenge, Dad! ;)
- ACH needed an Administrator for a few months;
- I needed a job and hope to have the right to the unemployment subsidy afterwards, thus having some base to hold on to while I develop the Yoga courses and possibly look for a job in Portugal (while I can't depend only on the Yoga);

Cool Sunday
Allow me to take you back a few days to January 8th…
I had had a long, long week of work, including the start of the hand-over with my replacement – yeeess!!! :) (Well, it was just on Saturday but one day is better than nothing, right?)
Went to bed on Saturday decided to go against my usual and deeply buried habits of sleeping until late and roaming around the house in my pyjamas most of the day without doing anything very productive. As I didn’t hear the alarm (what’s new?...), I only woke up around 12pm but feeling a new woman :)
Determined to be ‘dynamic’ for once, I put my book on my brand new bag (gift from Marivic on the staff Xmas dinner), and went out for a brunch at the mall garden. Had a tonic and some lovely “Spinakpita” (sort of small rolled crepes with cheese and spinaches, pretty good) and watched the Filipino families on their Sunday favourite promenade – window-shopping and strolling around the mall: father, mother, 2-3 children or more and, most of the time, the maid (or maids). You can’t miss them, they’re dressed like nurses and carry a small towel on the shoulder to wipe the kids’ faces, noses, hands, whatever needs to be wiped, as soon as it does.
I do try not to be prejudiced, nothing against having a maid, but it does amaze me to see them working on Sunday, ‘part’ of the family. Some families even have 2 maids… I suppose it’s essential if you have more than 2 kids, as one maid only has 2 hands. Right?
When the mosquitoes kept on biting me in spite of the mosquito lotion – what is it about my blood anyway?? -, I was forced to abandon my garden viewpoint on the Global Café and go to Max Brenner’s.
Now, Max Brenner is the place you don’t want to go if you’re trying to get fit, its Chocolate by the bald man, a total perdition place. I try not to go there very often…
‘Résultat des courses’ (NT. in short, result): some 1400 calories, under the disguise of a DELICIOUS layered-chocolate-cake topped with raspberry sauce, with nuts and custard on the side, accompanied by a Mexican Mocha Chocolate served on a hug-mug (as you would imagine that’s a mug that you hug). Halfway through the chocolate ‘mug’, I decided it was just too much chocolate to have in just one hour and finished the cake with a big glass of water :) And suddenly remembered I didn’t even use to like chocolate when I was a kid, I was always a tea and coffee person. The fault of R & R who, though they don’t know each other, have made me addicted to chocolate cakes!
The book was, of course, Oryx and Crake. I know I can be quite imposing with my readings… well, at least I only speak of the books I do like. Or mostly. Anyway... Oryx and Crake is a great book that got me thinking about quite a few important things. Plus it’s very well written and makes you addicted. Yes, ok, I’m also an easily addicted-to person. (Will you stop interrupting me, please? I’m trying to write here.)
I’ll leave you with one of my favourite ‘concepts’ on the book: are you a word person or numbers person? Which one are you?
Most of you tortured souls… you’re a words person, stranded on a Universe ‘that changes all the time’, just because of the tone a word was pronounced or the punctuation used on an e-mail, permanently haunted with “what did he really meant by that?”. Numbers people think they have it all figured out, but don't really get what’s going on, though they’re convinced they do. Nevertheless, they do produce useful things. And a number of dangerous stuff too.
I can easily place some of you.
Then… you have the erratic ones – which one am I? What is really important after all? “What is really?” Crake would say… The lost ‘sheep’, who oscillate between words and numbers, torn between one world and another, repeating to themselves that they should belong to one of the sides, if they want to fit in. If only they could... Right?
Artists? They’re words person. There are many ways of ‘wording things’.

Such a lazy weekend...
Ok, I got the message...
You're waiting for me to answer your last e-mail or, at least, post whatever it is that I have to tell about Boracay and stop displaying Summer photos while you're suffering with the tough European winter...
I complain about how hot it is and having the A/C on all the time while you all have these sorrow faces of "oh, it's so cold here". C'mon, people, have you seen the news about Kashmeer??
As for me, all I have for the days in Madrid are a few long-sleeve t-shirts and 1 knitted-cotton sweater. So go ahead and laugh...
The reason I didn't post any really interesting post this weekend and am here speaking about the weather (last time was politics and, before, the road traffic; am I missing any popular favourite subject?) is... I had a really lazy weekend! :) Finished reading Oryx and Crake and had a journey of pampering yesterday - new hairdo, hand, foot & nail care (yes, I know you, guys, couldn't care less but girls will...)!Wait until you see the photos!...
Have a nice week! Love from Manila :)

Yoga Class
I did it! I know I'm leaving in a month but it's never too late.
And I've paid for 12 classes in advance :) That will be a good argument to force myself to get out of work in time and attend the class!... Mondays and Fridays :)
I felt really good after the class. Today... well... I'm moving like an old lady and sitting and getting up suddenly require breathing in and out deeply. But I should be fine by tomorrow. Which is just perfect as I intend to go tomorrow evening again!

Coming up next... almost forgot Boracay!
A few articles are on draft... With photos, yes :)
Just be patient as I won't be able to post very often during January.
With only 4 weeks to go :), I'm really busy at work and I want to go back as fit and beautiful as I left so... I'm starting Yoga lessons tomorrow (twice a week) and am determined to get some proper rest.
Anyway, I won't disappear again, don't worry.
Coming up in January:
- What am I doing in Manila? (if you know, you're a privileged person, it means I write you more than once a year...)
- Cool Sunday (or Chocolate Delight, didn't decide the title yet)
- Patriotic Moments (starring Guterres, believe it or not)
- and finally the Fruits Photos!!
Now, have a look at this photo.
This is EDSA or Epifanio dos Santos Avenue, theatre of 2 people revolutions and my way to the office and back every day... It only looks like the photo between 12-2pm; at any other time the 5 lanes are crowded and, during Christmas season, traffic was scary!...
Ah!... Don't forget to check what's going on "In Other Wor(l)ds" - new contributors have joined in and there are some interesting posts.
Hmm... I guess that's all for today. Take care and have a nice week!!

Phrases ACH-Philippines
... that we picked up somewhere. And that somedays cheer (or have cheered) us up here at ACH-Philippines.
"Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices." Voltaire
"[you are] Gold!
Always believe in your soul
You’ve got the power to know: You’re indestructible !!
Always believe in , 'cause you are
Gold..." lyrics of Gold by Spandau Ballet
"Eternal vigilance is the price of Freedom." Mindanao Times - Interactive Online.
"I may not reach the impossible... But I will TRY!"
And the BEST...
"Life is good... and getting better.
Even if it's not... thinking it can only do you good." ;)

Top 2 FAQ - update
I can't count how many times I've been asked these over the last weeks so...
1. Date of return to Portugal?
My replacement can only start on January 30th so I'm probably leaving Manila on Feb 4/5; then 2 days of debriefing in Madrid and... Back home by February 7th or 8th??
2. New boyfriend yet?
Yes... :) My laptop!
Come on, you know I always need some 3 months to get used to the place, the work, the new rhythms. Then, I start meeting people and then I get a boyfriend. This time I only came 4 months so... I don't have enough time :(
Do you really want me to go back to Portugal or question 1 is just like "Hey, how's the weather over there"?
Anyway, you're lucky - I use my spare time to post some news here :)

Happy 2006 !! (update Jan 1st)
Hello! I've entered 2006 'before' most of you... :)
One of the things I find most wonderful about New Year's celebrations - and about each new day, actually - it's the way we, humans, find of starting over and over again, of believing new things are possible, of keeping on smiling, working and struggling, enjoying and celebrating LIFE!

My dearest wishes of
Health, Peace and Love
in 2006!
Be happy!!
Love, Susie
